Who was the Blue Jay who, after striking out, yelled out to the mound to demand that Tanana (in his elderly years as a slop pitcher for the Tigers) “pitch like a man!”?

Answer to your question, Sporko: Nelson Liriano. Still funny, 21 years later.

If Frank Tanana belongs in the Hall of Fame based on his name rhyming with banana, then shouldn’t the Rev. Canaan Banana, late President of Zimbabwe, already be enshrined?

[S]shouldn’t the Rev. Canaan Banana, late President of Zimbabwe, already be ensrined?

No. He never made it above AA ball.

However, I think the Rastafarians should seriously consider ditching Haile Selassie as God incarnate and make the switch to Rev. Banana. Makes just as much sense, theologically speaking, plus his name is freakin’ Banana.

Oh, and the Nelson Liriano encounter is hereby the 2nd official reason why Frank Tanana should be in the HoF.

A third reason why Frank Tanana should be in the Hall of Fame: one day in the 1980′s, Matt and I found ourselves in Mike Bennett’s living room drafting players for teams that never actually got around to playing. (At least I don’t remember any “real” games.) The players were sorted by “old” and “new” sets – meaning that you ended up with really crappy pitchers from the new card set. Someone picked Frank Tanana, and one of the others in the room (I forget just who it was, but Sporko might remember) piped up, “Aw, man! You got Frank Tanana? I wanted him!” AND TOTALLY MEANT IT.
