Carp beat Tigers like a red-headed stepchild
Anybody else notice that the Carp, who are still 4 games under .500, have gone 6-2 since I started cheering for them? Today they beat the division-leading Hanshin Tigers 5-2.
One of the challenges of following a team in a non-English-speaking market is that I’m largely in the dark about most things aside from the game score and the standings. There’s usually an interview with the “game hero” if the Carp win, though unfortunately no interview with the “turd who blew an easy double-play” or the like when they lose. I have a rough sense of some of the player names, but most things about the team remain delightfully opaque.
Based on what I know about the team and its season, here are some fun facts about the Hiroshima Toyo Carp:
| Category | Team Leader |
|---|---|
| Hits | No idea |
| RBI | Umm… Pass |
| Home Runs | Ochoa? He hit at least one, right? |
| Strikeouts | Don’t know, but apparently all pitchers throw “flame balls” according to translations |
| Wins | Some flame-baller |
| Dreams of one day making it to Major League Baseball and drilling Derek Jeter in the nuts with a “flame ball” | Takahashi |
God I love the Carp.
