If I remember my fashion history correctly, a cravat is more like a tie, often tied in an elaborate bow. An ascot is more like a scarf which is folded over itself and pinned, then tucked into a waistcoat.
So…cravat looks like a bowtie, and an ascot looks more like a traditional tie.

I think Katie has it right, as long as “waistcoat” uses the proper English pronunciation, to wit “wais’kit”.
