I love Prince Phillip

In my mind, the royals exist for only one purpose these days: inadvertent comedy:

Prince Philip mocked an Army cadet blinded in an IRA attack by poking fun at his dress sense.

As the Queen asked 15-year-old Stephen Menary how much he could see Philip said: “Not a lot, judging by that tie.”

Stephen was wearing the uniform of the Middlesex Cadet Force, which includes a red, blue and yellow tie.

Mr Menary was 14-years-old when he picked up a torch bomb that was thrown at Territorial Army barracks in west London, by the Real IRA in 2001.

I know what you’re thinking: How can the cadet be 14 in 2001 and 15 now? Because Prince Phillip is that fucking awesome, that’s how. Bending the space-time continuum to bring special resonance to a gaffe is but one of his many princely powers.

Update: So apparently he made this comment 7 years ago, which explains the 14/15 thingy. I still prefer my explanation.

Prince Phillip has always been a caracature of himself, and he’s even more of one now that he’s really bloody old. But it’s good to see he’s maintained that gift of tact and the common man’s touch that have endeared him to millions.
